Cobh Ramblers earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over Bray Wanderers on Friday evening at St. Colman’s Park.
An evenly matched first half saw Ramblers create the first opportunity through midfielder Dave Hurley whose attempt from distance was inches over the bar. Bray took time to settle into the game and should have had the lead in the 18th minute when a Daly cross was met powerfully by O’ Halloran but keeper Hunt produced an excellent reflex save.
Both defences were very much on top as both teams pushed for an opener. It almost came moments before half time when after some terrific work by Fernandes and Christopher, Turner managed to shoot low but Sava was equal to the attempt.
Bray burst out of the blocks at the beginning of the second half and missed a great opportunity when Derek Daly struck the post after being played clean through. Moments later Bray had two penalty appeals turned down and had the ball cleared off the line as Ramblers somehow survived an onslaught on their goal.
The pressure was now relentless from the visitors Hugh Douglas rose the highest to meet a corner but his header cannoned off the crossbar. The visitors were made to pay for those misses in the 57th minute when Ian Turner struck for Ramblers.
Dave Hurley worked some space for himself before shooting from 20 yards. The ball bounced up in front of Sava who then spilled it into the path of Turner who made no mistake from six yards.
That goal spurred Bray into life but they struggled to create many clear cut chances, Gannon having a go from distance in the 78th minute but failing to really test Hunt. Douglas had a glorious chance in the final minute but his header was brilliantly saved by Hunt. Ramblers held on to claim all three points.
