Cobh Ramblers secured a 2-1 victory over Galway United on Friday evening in a game that proved to be manager Stephen Henderson's final match in charge.

Henderson resigned immediately after the win at St Colman's Park with the team 7th in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

Both teams struggled to break each other down in the opening stages and It was the home side who created the best opening when a terrific cross field ball by Jaze Kabia was controlled by Stephen Christopher and then the wing back played a low cross along the six-yard box only for Ian Turner to scoop over the bar.

Galway’s attacking threat was restricted to mostly set pieces although player manager Alan Murphy went close with a shot from twenty yards. Ramblers found the breakthrough in the 35th minute when a clever Greg Henry pass sent Denzil Fernandes through on goal and he calmly beat Kevin Horgan at the near post.

The second half saw Galway emerge with added impetus and they went close through Maurice Nugent in the opening minutes. Moments later, some excellent combination play between Kabia and substitute Cammy Harlson saw Cobh man in on goal but he rifled his shot over the bar.

Kabia atoned for that miss in the 59th minute after some terrific work by Fernandes down the right saw him cross into the six-yard box where the striker was lurking to nod home with ease.

It looked at that point that Ramblers might run away with victory, but Galway showed their fighting spirit and got back into the game when Stephen Walsh pounced inside the box to beat Paul Hunt with a low shot into the corner.

Galway searched for the equaliser and had a good chance at the edge of the box that went over the bar  and penalty appeals were waved away when Conor Layng went down under the challenge of Kevin Taylor.

Substitute Harlson went close for Ramblers in the dying minutes but his header was inches over. Ramblers held on for the win to make it three games undefeated.
