Cobh Ramblers got their season firmly up and running in emphatic fashion with a 6-1 demolition of Wexford FC at St. Colman’s Park on Saturday evening.

On a very wet pitch, both teams started rather tentatively in the opening minutes happy to maintain possession. It did not take long however for Ramblers to assert control and they got the opener in the 15th minute when Jaze Kabia finished from close range after a great run and cross by Stephen Kenny.

Things didn’t get any better for the visitors eight minutes later when a Charlie Lyons run near post went unchecked and he headed Kenny’s corner home with a powerful finish. It was all too easy for Ramblers who looked hungry to increase their lead.

They didn’t have too long to wait when Kabia doubled his tally for the evening, heading home after a poor clearance from the Wexford defence. Ramblers should have made it four a minute later when a through ball found Turner who rounded Wexford keeper Joe Walshe but somehow missed with the goal gaping.

Wexford offered nothing in response to the onslaught to their goal and would have been grateful to get in at half-time and regroup. Ramblers picked up the second half just where they left off. Kenny was once again involved as his darting run and low cross was unluckily turned into the net by Wexford captain Owen McCormack.

Wexford never gave up and to their credit got a goal back from the penalty spot through Jack Doherty after Emmet Nugent was brought down just inside the box by Cobh defender James McSweeney.

Any hopes of a miracle comeback were quickly extinguished as substitute Cian Leonard added the fifth (77’) for the home side before man of the match Stephen Kenny got a goal (80’) to add to his three assists. All too easy for Ramblers in the end as Wexford suffer their third straight defeat.
