Cork City are now four points behind Dundalk in the race for the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title as they were held to a 0-0 by Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross on Friday night.

During what was a tame first half, Garry Buckley went close for Cork City after he combined cleverly with Graham Cummins but the attacking midfielder could only send his effort just past the far top left corner from a good position in the box.

Rovers’ only attempt of the opening period fell to the returning Greg Bolger but the former City captain’s powerful drive from distance drifted harmlessly over the bar.

The Champions had the perfect opportunity to finally end the stalemate on the hour mark as they were awarded a penalty when Joey O’Brien fouled Karl Sheppard inside the box.

Kieran Sadlier, who had scored his five previous penalties this season, took the responsibility for the kick but he was denied by a stunning save low to his right by Rovers’ 16-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. Sadlier tried to make amends as the game drew to a close as he drilled a number of efforts towards goal from distance but it wasn’t to be as Rovers hung on for the draw.
