St Patricks Athletic hopes of finishing in the European placed received a huge boost as they snatched a last minute winner to defeat Cork City 1-0 at Turner’s Cross on Friday evening.

In a game of few chances, Cork City’s best fell to Gearoid Morrissey at the beginning of the first and Karl Sheppard at the beginning of the second but neither could hit the target with their efforts.

Pats introduced Ronan Hale and Glen McAuley for their debuts in the closing stages as they sensed an opportunity to sneak a win.

And it worked a treat as Hale found the far bottom right corner with a superb curled strike in the 90th minute to earn his side the three points.

The result sees Pats close the gap on fourth place Bohemians to just six points while Finn Harps are now just four points behind City in the relegation battle.
