Cork City secured three crucial points in their pursuit of Dundalk at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they defeated Sligo Rovers 1-0 at Turners Cross on Tuesday night.

A superb goal from Jimmy Keohane with just 12 minutes remaining was enough to earn City the victory that sees them remain just two points behind the Lilywhites in the race for the title.

The Champions started the match brightly and they went close to taking the lead after two minutes but Graham Cummins’ close range effort from Colm Horgan’s cross was scooped away from the bottom left corner by Rovers keeper Mitchell Beeney.

City struggled to create chances following that frantic opening period but they ought to have taken the lead just past the hour mark. Graham Cummins and Kieran Sadlier combined well in the box but Barry McNamee’s somehow scuffed the latter’s cross wide of the back post from a couple of yards.

And just as it looked like Cork would rue those missed opportunities, they snatched their second 1-0 win in five days thanks to substitute Jimmy Keohane, who netted just three minutes after being introduced.

The former Rovers midfielder expertly chested the ball out of his feet inside the penalty area before drilling his shot across the keeper and into the far bottom left corner of the net. The win leaves City in second spot three points ahead of Derry City while Sligo Rovers remain eight following this spirited showing.
