Cork City stretched their lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division to 12 points as they beat St Patrick's Athletic at Turner's Cross on Sunday afternoon.

City almost took the lead midway through the first through Karl Sheppard but the wingers stunning effort from the right of the penalty crashed against the inside of the far post.

The League Leaders scored what proved to be the match winning goal deep into injury time in the first half as Sean Maguire curled home his 19th league goal of the season from the penalty spot after Billy Dennehy fouled Steven Beattie in the box.

The visitors' troubles were compounded when Owen Garvan was dismissed during the half-time break following an incident in the tunnel.

A tame second half followed although Maguire almost added a superb second for his side after 69 minutes but his clever chip hit the far post late on.
