Cork City secured an important three points in their pursuit of Dundalk at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they narrowly defeated St Patricks Athletic 1-0 at Turners Cross on Friday evening. After a bright start from the visitors, in which both Dean Clarke and Conan Byrne were denied by excellent last ditch blocks from Conor McCarthy and Colm Horgan respectively early on, City went closest to scoring in a tame first half. Barry McNamee’s corner after 15 minutes picked out the towering Graham Cummins at the back stick but the striker was unfortunate to see his header back across goal clip the far upright. But Cummins would break the deadlock at the beginning of the second half as he looped a brilliant header over Pats goalkeeper Barry Murphy for what proved to be the winner. Pats pressed for an equaliser late on as Christy Fagan drilled a half-volley over shortly after Ryan Brennan side footed their best chance wide of the near post from a few yards as City eventually clung on to the crucial three points which sees them climb to second.
