Cork City made it two wins out of two at the beginning of the new SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they deservedly defeated Waterford 2-0 at Turners Cross on Friday evening.

After a tame opening half in which both sides best opportunities came from distance, the match sparked into life at the start of the second half as City showed why they are champions of Ireland.

The Leesiders took the lead in the 55th minute through Gearoid Morrissey, who tucked his effort into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the area after Barry McNamee’s initial effort was blocked.

And the home side sealed the victory eight minutes later as Cork’s only other change from the opening day win away to St Pats also found the target. Kieran Sadlier’s clipped ball over the top found Garry Buckley in the box and he expertly prodded past the keeper at his near post to give Cork the three points at the expense of their Munster rivals.

City now travel to Sligo Rovers on Monday night while Waterford host St Pats on the same evening.
