Cork City made it six wins out of six at the beginning of the new SSE Airtricity League season as they defeated title rivals Dundalk at Turners Cross on Saturday afternoon.

Two first-half strikes from Karl Sheppard was enough to see City continue their winning start to the campaign which sees them remain top and crucially six points clear of last year’s champions, who responded in vein through David McMillan.

Sheppard grabbed his first after 22 minutes when he tapped in from a few yards after an excellent run and pullback from the imperious Sean Maguire.

The striker snatched his and his sides second before half time after another fine pass from Maguire allowed him to calmly round the goalkeeper and tuck the ball home at the near post.

Dundalk made it an interesting finale when substitute David McMillian fired in at the near post from the edge of the penalty area.

But City did enough to hold on and their task was helped when Dundalk were reduced to ten men late on as striker Ciaran Kilduff received his second yellow card.
