Cork City remain just two points behind SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Dundalk as they defeated Waterford 3-0 at Turner’s Cross on Friday evening.

Goals from Garry Buckley, Graham Cummins and Kieran Sadlier was enough to see City deservedly claim the Munster Derby bragging rights and ensure the champions keep pace with the Lilywhites at the top.

During what was an evenly contested first half, Ismahil Akinade had Waterford’s best opportunity at goal after just five minutes but he couldn’t beat Mark McNulty when through one on one with the keeper.

Kieran Sadlier almost added another long-range stunner to his repertoire moments later but he was denied by Lawrence Vigouroux, who was playing his last game for Waterford before his loan spell from Swindon Town concludes.

Barry McNamee rattled the woodwork with a powerful strike from distance midway through the half before he played his part in creating the City opener deep into injury time.

The former Derry City man’s long free eventually broke to Garry Buckley inside the area and the attacking midfielder tucked the ball into the corner for his fourth goal in four games.

Genuine goal scoring chances were at a premium in the second period until Graham Cummins doubled City’s lead with 15 minutes remaining as he expertly headed Karl Sheppard’s cross into the net from close range.

And Sadlier grabbed his sides third moments later as he drilled Cummins’ knock down into the corner from a few yards to ensure City now move 11 points clear of their third-placed opponents having played a game fewer.
