Cork City are through to the quarter-finals of the E.A Sports Cup as they comfortably defeated local rivals Cobh Ramblers 4-1 at Turner’s Cross on Monday evening.

The Premier Division side controlled the first half for long spells but it wasn’t until the 37th minute that they finally took the lead as James Tilley broke inside the area and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Paul Hunt at his near post.

City doubled their lead at the beginning of the second period as Dan Smith’s clever pass sent Liam Nash through on goal and the man of the match fired home from a tight angle.

The home side added a third just past the hour mark as a poor clearance from Paul Hunt fell kindly to Gary Comerford and the midfielder expertly lofted his half volley over the head of the stranded shot stopper and into the back of the net.

Ramblers, to their credit, continued to battle and they got their reward in the 77th minute when former Cork City youth star Denzil Fernandes headed into the bottom right corner from a few yards after Ian Turner’s initial strike was hacked off the line.

But the Leesiders restored their three-goal lead just one minute later as substitute Darragh Crowley scored with his first touch, drilling the ball past Hunt from close range to seal the win.
