Cork City returned to the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they defeated Derry City 4-2 in an enthralling match at Turners Cross on Monday afternoon.

Cork took the lead after just seven minutes as Karl Sheppard expertly headed Graham Cummins’ brilliant cross from the left past the keeper at his near post. Sheppard grabbed his third league goal of the season at the beginning of the second half as he coolly slotted the ball past the Derry goalkeeper when through on goal.

Derry continued to battle and just four minutes after Ronan Curtis’ deflected effort from distance found the net, they levelled the scores when Ronan Hale drilled the ball into the roof of the net from a difficult angle.

Cork rallied and they soon regained the lead as Kieran Sadlier curled his free-kick through the ball and into the bottom left corner. The Leesiders sealed their fifth win in a row late on as Graham Cummins headed home from a couple of yards after his initial effort had struck the crossbar.
