Cork City moved to within one point of Dundalk at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, albeit they have now played one game more than their title rivals, as they defeated Derry City 5-0 at Turner’s Cross on Monday evening.

Cork opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Garry Buckley raced onto Karl Sheppard’s clever pass before the attacking midfielder emphatically drilled the ball into the roof of the net when through on goal.

The Champions doubled their lead just past the half an hour mark as Jimmy Keohane’s shot from the edge of the box squirmed under Gerard Doherty and into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Leesiders needed a sensational double save from Peter Cherrie to deny both Gavin Peers’ and Dan Seaborne’s quick-fire efforts before they finally made it 3-0 at the beginning of the second half when Buckley turned in Graham Cummins’ unselfish cross at the back post.

Damien Delaney made it four when he headed into the top left corner past the hour for his first goal for the club before Ronan Coughlan also grabbed his first goal for his new side on his debut as he cleverly clipped the ball over the keeper from close range late on.
