Derry City went five points clear of Shamrock Rovers in third position as they secured a 3-0 win against Limerick at Maginn Park.

The Candystripes took the lead after 30 seconds when a blind pass from David O'Connor led Barry McNamee in on goal, and the Donegal man scored his ninth of the season.

It wasn't long before Derry doubled their lead and they were firmly in control of the fixture. Derry forward Rory Patterson had a shot from a distance, which looked destined for the back of the net, but Lukas Schubert appeared to get the slightest of touches to claim the second goal for himself after nine minutes played.

The second half didn't offer the same excitement as the first, but Derry did manage the game extremely well in what was a very professional performance from the averagely young side.

Limerick struggled to make themselves a threat in front of goal all game and the Super Blues didn't offer much going forward, which will be a huge worry for Neil McDonald. Derry sealed the three points six minutes from time when Dean Clarke completely made a hash of a clearance inside his penalty area, and Ben Doherty didn't waste any time intercepting the ball for himself.

The 20-year-old smashed it into the top corner of the Limerick net to secure all three points for Derry City, which moves them onto 40 points, seven behind Dundalk in second.
