Longford Town have maintained their lead at the top of the table after they defeated Drogheda United 1-0 at United Park.
Aaron Dobbs struck the winner on the stroke of half-time as Neale Fenn’s side continued their fine start to the season. The host had the ball in the back of the net after two minutes when Chris Lyons fired past Lee Steacy but he was adjudged offside from Luke Heeney’s cross.
Heaney was threatening again for Drogheda moments later but his strike was too close to Steacy. Longford began to pass through the Drogheda midfield and they looked dangerous through Dobbs who fired wide after being found by Aodh Dervin before producing a spin and volley that Luca Gratzer was equal to in goal.
The visitors struck on the stroke of half-time as a quick break saw Dobbs played through on goal and he composed himself before curling the ball into the bottom corner.
Drogheda came close to drawing level ten minutes into the second-half as Luke McNally clipped a cross to the back post and Mark Doyle rose highest only to miss the target.
Substitute Karl Chambers then squandered a gilt-edged chance to seal victory and he was nearly punished on 80 minutes when Sean Brennan’s low free-kick was smartly stopped by the impressive Stacey.
Drogheda continued to push players forward in the dying stages but Longford were resolute at the back as they held on for all three points.
