Finn Harps opened up a four-point gap between themselves and Drogheda United at the bottom of the table as they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at United Park.

The visitors made the perfect start as Eddie Dsane won a free-kick 20-yards from goal and curled the resulting effort over the wall, leaving goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness with no chance.

Drogheda almost had an immediate response as the lively Thomas Byrne exchanged passes with Jake Hyland before curling a stunning 25-yard drive off the crossbar.

Harps pounced on several individual errors by Drogheda with Ciaran McGuigan culpable as McAleer was denied by McGuinness from point blank range.

Drogheda huffed and puffed throughout but Harps got the second goal their play deserved when Danny Morrissey ran clean through on goal before diverting the ball beyond McGuinness into an empty net.

A crucial result for Harps sees them rise to eight in the table with Drogheda now rock bottom ahead of a run of fixtures against Sligo Rovers, Galway United and St Patrick's Athletic.
