A 90th minute winner for 10-man Drogheda United sealed a remarkable 2-1 win for the Boynesiders over Shamrock Rovers.

Drogheda took the lead just past the half-hour mark as Sean Thornton was fouled in the area and he stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick.

Rovers pushed hard for the equaliser but they were awarded a penalty of their own in the 88th minute as Gary Shaw tumbled in the area giving Graham Burke the simple task of levelling.

Drogheda captain Sean Brennan was sent off for his protests but there was one final twist as a deep free-kick into the area was bundled over the line to end Drogheda's 12-year wait for a home league win over the Hoops.
