Drogheda United have climbed up to second in the table after they defeated Galway United 3-0 at United Park.

A goal in either half from Chris Lyons and a late strike from Jordan Adeyemo was enough to secure the Drogs’ third win on the bounce as Galway suffered their second defeat of the week.

Drogheda opened the scoring early on as a raking pass from Mark Hughes released Mark Doyle down the left and he crossed for Lyons who bundled the ball over the line at the second attempt.

Galway looked bright on the counter-attack but they failed to really test Luca Gratzer in goal as Drogheda missed chances to double their lead. Luke McNally, who scored in last week’s victory away to Cabinteely, saw a snapshot saved by Kevin Horgan before Doyle volleyed over the bar just before the break.

A low key second-half sprung into life on 62 minutes. A throw in found its way to Lyons who let the ball roll across his body before unleashing an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net for his 6th of the season.

The hosts saw out the remaining minutes in comfort and clinched all three points in stoppage time when Jordan Adeyemo fired into the bottom corner. Galway’s bad night was compounded at the death when Conor Melody was shown a straight red card for excessive force on Mark Doyle.
