Drogheda United have gone top of the First Division as they recorded a 4-0 win over 10-man Cobh Ramblers on opening night at United Park.

The hosts opened the score after just seven minutes as Mark Doyle slotted the ball into the far bottom corner following a fine run and pass from Thomas Byrne.

Drogheda doubled their lead on 28 minutes as Sean Brennan’s speculative drive was fumbled by Paul Hunt in goal leaving Chris Lyons with a simple finish.

Cobh’s task became all the more difficult when Cian Leonard was shown a second yellow card in quick succession for fouls on Luke McNally.

United effectively ended the contest early in the second-half as another fine passing move saw Doyle pick out Wixted who fired high into the roof of the net.

Drogheda made it four in stoppage time as Mark Doyle’s half-volley defected in via the inside the post to seal a perfect start for the Boynesiders.
