Drogheda United have climbed to second in the table after they defeated Cobh Ramblers 4-2 at United Park.

Drogheda took the lead after just eight minutes as Sean Brennan slipped the ball through for Stephen Meaney who lifted the ball over the advancing Paul Hunt for the opener.

The visitors had an immediate response as they levelled straight from kick-off as Stephen Christopher’s cross was flicked on by Cameron Harlson into the path of Stephen O’Leary to level.

It was three goals in five minutes as Drogheda regained the lead when Brennan’s drilled cross was finished first-time by Mark Doyle as he fired into the far corner.

In a case of deja vu, Drogheda made it 3-1 on the half hour mark as another corner from the right caused havoc in the Cobh penalty area with Doyle reacting quickest to notch his 10th goal of the season.

Drogheda missed further chances to extend their lead and they were made to pay as a free-kick from the right was headed beyond Gratzer by Cian Leonard to half the deficit.

A less frantic second-half was to ensue and the dangerous Doyle almost completed his hat-trick on 63 minutes as his header came back off the inside of the post with Hunt somehow denying James Clarke’s rebound.

Cobh struggled to really threaten for an equaliser and Drogheda sealed the victory with 10 minutes left to play as Chris Lyons was fouled in the penalty area by Charlie Lyons with Sean Brennan making no mistake from the spot.

Victory for Drogheda marks their seventh in their last eight games while it’s back to back defeats for manageress Cobh.
