Drogheda United have closed the gap on league leaders Shelbourne to two points after they demolished Wexford 6-0 at United Park.

Drogheda hit the front on 18 minutes when Mark Doyle won possession deep in the Wexford half and while his shot was parried by Corey Chambers, Chris Lyons was on hand to tap home his ninth of the season.

Things went from bad to worse for Wexford as they were 2-0 down within three minutes as Daibhid Corish diverted the ball into his own goal after Lyons’ cutback. Jake Hyland came close to extending Drogheda’s lead as his powerful drive was tipped over by Chambers while Sean Roche had Wexford’s only first-half effort of note.

The hosts did eventually make it 3-0 early in the second-half as Sean Brennan cut the ball back for Stephen Meaney to fire home from eight yards.

Meaney then netted his second of the game with a simple finish on 74 minutes before Lyons struck the goal of the evening with a fine strike that nestled into the top corner.

Wexford were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes as Lee Costello dragged Mark Doyle to the ground in the penalty area with Lyons making no mistake from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

An evening to forget for Wexford while Drogheda will be interested spectators tomorrow night when third place Longford Town host leaders Shelbourne.
