Dundalk and Derry could not break the defensive rear guard as they played out a stalemate here in Oriel Park.

In a game Dundalk needed to win to maintain momentum, Kenny Shields Derry side held firm to claim a point and frustrate Stephen Kenny. Dundalk were fluid and hardworking in the first half as they tried to break down Derry's rearguard.

Some resolute defending and brilliant goalkeeping from Ger Doherty kept the home side at bay. A brilliant through ball to Massey was met with a vicious shot from the captain which forced a top drawer save from Doherty.

Chris Shields nearly scored for the home side only for his half volley to go over the bar. In a second chance with little chances, as the game wore on Dundalk came close as the ball was whipped across the face of goal, Kilduff and McMillan both mishit it and the chance went a begging.

Jamie McGrath had a shot go just over the bar but Derry had chances too. Nathan Boyle and Barry McNamee broke well to create havoc for Dundalk only for the side netting to deny them a smash and grab goal.

In the end the result was fair but Dundalk will feel on the night they should have done better. For Derry it was a resolute performance and shows despite all that has happened they are a side who will make an impact this season.
