Dundalk and Sligo had to have a share of the spoils in what was an exciting and tense game in Oriel Park.

In what was a new era for Dundalk under new management, it looked as if Dundalk were going to continue where they left off but they failed to get the result they would have craved as Sean Murray cancelled out Jack Keaney's first-half free kick.

The big news on the night was the loss of both Patrick McEleney and Robbie Benson to injury. The game wasn't rough but it was tough. The one player that stood out was the man of the match Edward McGinty, had it not been for him, Dundalk would have been out of sight.

It looked as if Dundalk got off to the perfect start with an early first-half penalty, Robbie Benson was felled, however, Hoban was denied an opening goal to his account by a brilliant save.

Unnerved by the miss Dundalk kept pressing forward only for McGinty to deny them at every turn. When the goal was to be scored Jack Keaney's free-kick beat Gary Rogers at the near post in what was their first real attempt in the game.

The second half saw Sean Murray equalise with a brilliant effort that will only endear him to the home faithful. The home side continued to press but continued to be frustrated.

Despite a late flurry of chances, Dundalk had nothing to show. In the end, a share of the spoils and point apiece, it could prove valuable come November.
