Patrick Hoban scored twice to close the gap at the top by a single point as Dundalk overcame a very good display by Sligo Rovers.

The forward hit his tenth and eleventh goal this season as he looks to recapture the form that he was much loved for. Dundalk had the lions share of possession in the first half as Sligo proved they were not going to concede easily.

The real chance fell to Dundalk as a brilliant save from the half volley by Gartland by Beeney denies the centre back the opening goal. Patrick Hoban was next to try his luck but his header was well gathered by Beeney.

Hoban would get redemption as he scored from the penalty spot as Connolly was brought down in the area by McClean. As the first half was coming to an end Gary Rogers took down McAleer to give a lifeline to Sligo.

Rhys McCabe gave Rogers no chance and converted the penalty. The second half saw Dundalk lay siege on the Sligo goal with a brilliant chance as Hoban with a great pass to Benson who laid it off to Murray and somehow it goes wide.

Another chance went a begging as Massey's cross came to Connolly whose shot flew over the bar. As the minutes ticked on it looked like it was going for a draw only for Hoban to head it past Beeney to send Oriel in raptures.
