Dundalk responded in kind to last weeks loss to Cork City by taking the points at home to Drogheda United in the Louth derby.

The champions maintained their 100% home record but had to dig deep against a dogged Drogheda United side. Dundalk set their stall out with intent from the offset and after some early opening exchanges the breakthrough came after 9 minutes.

A brilliant team move by Dundalk saw them break down the left with Dane Massey, cross whipped into the onrushing David McMillan who headed it past McGuinness to put the home side ahead. They didn't have to wait long for the second goal with talented Michael Duffy scoring his first home goal of the season.

Another great cross from the left hand side by Massey was drilled low in the path of Michael Duffy who slammed it home from close range. Dundalk didn't have it all their own way with Mark Griffin tapping home from close range for Drogheda United to reduce the deficit. This didn't help the nerves of the home side but they held on until half time.

The second half saw Dundalk start with intent but they had to be patient to add a third goal, in the end it came with the simplest of moves. After Ciaran McGuigan saw red for Drogheda United the resulting free kick saw a clever training ground move for Brian Gartland to tap from from 5 yards.

Dundalk and Drogheda both had chances to add to their tallies but this was a much needed win for Dundalk.

Drogheda United need to pick up points and fast if they are stay clear of the three team relegation dog fight this season.
