Finn Harps moved six points clear of bottom spot in the Premier Division as they secured a narrow victory over Bohemians.

A huge roar erupted around Ballybofey at the final whistle as the Donegal-faithful sensed the importance of the result as Harry Ascroft's goal was the difference between the sides.

The home side went into the game looking to keep up their impressive form of late in their battle to avoid the drop, three points ahead of bottom side UCD.

Bohemians were also on the hunt for a crucial victory with Derry City closing in on their third spot in the battle for Europe.

It was the home side who got the crucial break-through with just nine minutes on the clock. Harry Ascroft has been in fine form for the Ballybofey side of late and he continued his form to find the net to put the home side ahead.

Bohemians struggled to create many chances throughout the first 45 minutes and that continued in the second-half as the European-chasers faltered against a tough Harps side.

Very few goal-scoring opportunities were created throughout the second-half but Harps won't mind as they go into the Extra.ie FAI Cup against Shamrock Rovers next week with a considerable gap at the bottom of the Premier Division table.

Bohemians face Shelbourne in the Extra.ie FAI Cup next week as they move down a place in the Premier Division on goal difference to fourth spot as the battle for Europe takes another turn.
