Galway United lifted themselves off the bottom of the SSE Airtricity First Division when the Tribesmen defeated Wexford 2-0 at Eamonn Deacy Park for their first home win of the season on Friday night.

Neither side could hit the target in the first half until Conor Barry smacked the ball into the top corner on the half hour mark, to put the home side in front, after a simple Vinny Faherty pass played the midfielder open outside the box.

Sean Callan came very close to grabbing an equaliser for the visitors on a number of occasions through great deliveries from teammate Jack Doherty. United doubled their lead late in the second half after a Conor Barry free-kick found Wilson Waweru at the back post.

His header clipped the crossbar but the ball fell to Maurice Nugent who tapped the ball over the line to clinch the three points.
