Galway United secured their second First Division victory of the 2018 season as they overcame the challenge of Cabinteely 3-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park thank to a Danny Furlong double and one special strike from Conor Barry.

Cabinteely started the contest brightly and pressured the home side with three corners in succession, but they could not capitalise on their early opportunities. Maurice Nugent gave Stephen McGuinness a test on 10 minutes with a glancing header before Furlong got on the end of a lovely dinked through-ball from Ryan Connolly but the Galway striker was unable to beat McGuinness with a deft touch. That was until Furlong was played through by Conor Barry in the 42nd minute of the match before coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net to seal the breakthrough.

Following the restart, the visitors again started strongly with some smart pressing, but they did not test Tadhg Ryan in the Galway goals. Then, Barry netted one of the best goals the Deacy Park faithful are ever likely to see - a long range cracker that had McGuinness beaten all ends up.

Just over five minutes later Kieran Marty Waters belted a shot from long range only to see it cannon off the crossbar. The resulting rebound was spurned by Paul Fox from close range with Ryan all at sea.

Furlong rubbed salt into the wounds soon therafter when he chased a long ball down field, outmuscled his marker and chipped the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to all but seal the win. There was late drama as Cabo secured a conslation through Joe Doyle in the 87th minute, while Christian Lotefa was dismissed from the field of play for a bad challenge on Connolly
