Galway United have been relegated to the First Division following a narrow defeat to the deposed champions Dundalk.

Proceedings started brightly for Shane Keegan's troops after Stephen Folan gave them an early lead in the ninth minute, but it lasted mere seconds as Dundalk pulled one back almost immediately through Niclas Vemmelund.

Jamie McGrath made it 2-1 to the Lilywhites in the 42nd minute, completing a brilliant team move, the final pass assisted by Dane Massey - which was a cruel time to concede from United's perspective.

But it was to get worse for the hosts when Patrick McEleney produced the best finish of the evening, chipping Conor Winn from the edge of the area, right before the half-time whistle blew.

Following the restart, Keegan's charges were the better team, first to every ball and playing with fiery determination, so when Rory Hale pulled one back with a smart finish past Gary Rogers in the 53rd minute, the comeback was on.

Ronan Murray put United closer to a dramatic win-from-behind when he blasted the ball home in the 89th minute to level the scores, but a defensive error soon after that saw Michael Duffy punish a forward-thinking Galway when he scored in injury time. Despite a spirited rally, United's First Division status is confirmed as the curtain comes down on a turbulent season.
