St. Patrick’s Athletic eventually romped to a 5-0 victory in the Inchicore derby but were made to fight all the way by their Leinster league neighbours Inchicore Athletic, who played practically all of the second half with ten men. It was 0-0 at half-time, despite Pat’s dominating the possession stakes but unable to convert, although they did hit the bar twice. The game’s defining moment probably arrived in the 46th minute when Inchicore’s left back Leon Fahey Byrne was dismissed on a second yellow card, having been booked in the opening half. The Saints made the breakthrough through Darragh Markey in the 55th minute after neat inter play between the scorer and the impressive Ian Turner. Inchicore’s stout resistance continued until the 76th minute when heroic (until then) keeper Patrick Reilly allowed a speculative Jake Keegan shot under his body and over the line. The Inchicore Athletic side understandably tired thereafter and Pat’s added three more strikes. Conan Byrne arrived as a substitute to convert a penalty after Keegan was fouled. Keegan raced through to bag his second and Pat’s fourth before Conan Byrne sealed the win with a fine 88th minute cross shot. Five second half goals for St. Pat’s (four by subs.) and a place in the next round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.
