Limerick beat Bray Wanderers at the Markets Field thanks to a stunning strike by their captain Shaun Kelly. The right back buried the only goal of the game in the 84th minute to see off a Bray side that had the better of the chances up to that poin

Danny Morrissey notched his first goal in the Blue of Limerick to sink winless Bray Wanderers at the Markets Field.

The ex-Cork City man was brought on from the bench and within minutes helped Limerick back to winning ways in a cagey clash on Shannonside. Both sides appeared to be fearful of making mistakes, with two tight defensive units allowing little goalmouth action.

The bumpy surface didn’t deter Limerick from passing the ball, but their slow build up was easily foiled by Dave Mackey’s troops. The two openings in the first half fell to the hosts, William Fitzgerald linked up with Daniel Kearns, who fired across goal, but Bray scrambled the ball clear.

Aaron Dillon made the only save of the half when he denied a tame effort from Eoin Wearen, after good build-up from Fitzgerald and Connor Ellis. Bray, meanwhile, forced a brace of corners, but like the pair of attacking free-kicks they were awarded, they failed to test Brendan Clarke or his defence.

The change of ends saw little change in approach from either side, with Darren Dennehy heading inches wide moments into the second half. Aaron Greene passed up Bray’s best opening, when his pace allowed him a one-on-one with Brendan Clarke.

Greene, who played with Limerick in 2016 shot straight at the ‘keeper. Limerick brought in former Dutch underage international Barry Maguire for his debut as well as attacker Danny Morrissey.

Morrissey struck gold with one of his first touches. He latched onto a beautiful cross from Shane Tracy to find the back of the net. His diving header was enough to give Limerick the win, with Bray unable to apply any considerable pressure in the closing moments worry Brendan Clarke in the Limerick goal.
