Limerick FC's hopes of escaping relegation received a timely boost as Shane Duggan's stunner earned them a 2-1 win over Waterford FC at the Markets Field.

It was an eventful game that saw both sides reduced to 10 men in the opening 45 minutes. Limerick saw Eoin Wearen sent off on three minutes for a pull back on Noel Hunt inside the penalty area but Waterford missed the chance to go ahead as Paul Keegan's spot kick was well saved by Tommy Holland.

Limerick then had to readjust and a rare counter attack saw Will Fitzgerald tugged back by David Webster.

Billy Dennehy made no mistake from 12 yards and Limerick were into a lead against the run of play. Webster was then given his marching orders for a horror challenge on Connor Ellis that earned him his second booking.

Limerick should have been boosted by that, but former player Bastien Hery levelled things after the break when he was left run nearly 70 yards to fire into the corner unopposed. The home side had one trick left up their sleeve with Duggan popping up with a screamer that saw his side to what could be an invaluable victory.
