Longford Town are back on top of the table after a hard fought win over Limerick.

Substitute Dean Byrne opened the scoring after what had been a tough game up to that point. Longford had three chances to poke the ball in the net halfway through the first half, a header at the back post by McDonnel was saved, Evans had scuffed his shot and it got cleared off the line and Sam Verdon kicked air two yards out.

The first half ended goalless without much of a fuss, but the second half started at a blistering pace. Limerick were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute, Ellis was through on goal but got sandwiched between Elworthy and Breslin, with the former receiving a yellow card.

Shane Tracy took the penalty but without any real conviction. His tame effort went to Steacy's right and he was able to save with ease down and low. Less than ten minutes later and more drama for the away side.

Sean McSweeney was given a straight red card for a two footed lunge on Elworthy. With just 15 minutes to go, Longford finally made the extra man count. Dean Byrne on the right wing drove forward, played a one two with Elworthy on the edge of the box and when Byrne got it back, he smashed the ball home past Brady.

Longford do deserve all three points, but only just, as Limerick failed to have any real attacking threat.
