Longford Town earned a spot in the second round of the Extra.ie FAI Cup thanks to a 3-1 victory over near neighbours Athlone Town. A lacklustre first half performance from the home side saw Athlone go in 1-0 up at the break. A great goal from Keal

Longford Town claimed the Midlands bragging rights with a 3-1 victory over Athlone Town at the City Calling Stadium.

An injury to David O'Sullivan presented an opportunity to Enda Curran to impress for the home side and he didn't waste much time - opening the scoring on 22 minutes.

The former Galway United frontman got his second of the game on 40 minutes, but Athlone pulled one back through Dragog Sfrijan just before the interval.

Longford, however, proved to be the stronger of the two teams throughout with Kevin O'Connor impressing in midfield.

When Athlone had substitute Jason Molloy sent off the signs were clear that the home team were about to seal the three points.

Curran made sure of that by completing his hat-trick with a finish in added time to give Alan Mathews' team a deserved win.
