First Division side Cabinteely eventually saw off a gallant Newmarket Celtic side to progress to the next round of the Irish Daily Mail Cup.

Substitute Luke Clucas made the difference, providing an assist and a wonderful volley to give Pat Devlin’s side a firm grip in the final quarter.

However, Eoin Hayes replied with a wonderful strike for the Clare outfit, but the Dubliners held on to advance.

Deadlocked heading into the final quarter, Joe Doyle finished a lovely Clucas cross with a header. Sub Clucas slammed home a volley minutes later, giving former keeper Shane Cusack little chance.

The first half was an even affair, with the compact Clare side led by former Waterford and Limerick man Pat Purcell, affording Cabinteely mere scraps. Jack Watson should have opened the scoring on seven minutes, firing over at the back post when he looked likely to score.

The Dubliners increased the intensity in the second period and went close through Kieran Waters and before Karl Byrne hit the post. Shane Cusack was in good form throughout, but could do little about either goal.
