Extra-time was required to separate the sides after a tense 1-1 draw in Trondheim as Brian Gartland's header gave Dundalk the much deserved and valued first goal before Yann-Erik de Lanlay gave the home side a deserved equaliser before half time. It wasn't to be however as Dundalk were knocked out by a Matthías Vilhjálmsson goal in extra time.
 
In what was a frantic game throughout Dundalk despite under pressure at times kept their composure and got their just rewards following a series of attacking plays. Gartland scored a vital header from a Michael Duffy corner to stun the home crowd.
 
The continued to press with David McMillan almost putting the tipping the tie in Dundalk favours only for his goal bound header to be saved at the last second. As half-time drew closer like last week Rosenborg got their equaliser when de Lanlay skipped past Sean Gannon and slotted it past Gary Rogers to send the expectant home crowd in raptures.
 
The second half of normal time saw Dundalk under serious pressure with Rosenborg showing their quality and experience and tried to put the game to bed. However Dundalk showed some resolute defending and contained the flowing attack at bay. As the game entered its final minutes Robbie Benson from a set piece smashed a brilliant shot towards goal only for it to be tipped away by Hansen.
 
Extra-time saw both Dundalk and Rosenborg have chances to score as they game opened that sides went to trading blows. A cross from Hedenstad saw Vilhjálmsson head it into the top corner giving Rogers no chance to put the Norwegian champions in the lead. Kilduff just on the stroke off extra-time half-time had a chance to equalise only for his goal bound effort to be brilliantly saved.
 
Dundalk were resorted to half chances in the second half of extra-time with Rosenborg using their experience to see out the game and send Dundalk out of the competition.
