Most in the 2,612 attendance at the Tallaght Stadium will have left wondering how the home side failed to take all three points from a rip roaring encounter with Sligo Rovers.

Stephen Bradley’s men dominated possession, earned thirteen corners to none from the opposition, delivered the lion’s share of the attempts on goal yet could not muster a winner.

A well-drilled Sligo eleven rode their luck but in the end deserved to hold out for a 0-0 draw. Graham Cummins was very close to a debut goal for Shamrock Rovers in the 42nd minute.

A delicious chip by the busy Greg Bolger was met powerfully by Cummins’ head. The ball beat Ed McGinty all ends up but cannoned back into play off the Sligo crossbar.

Sean Kavanagh, Dylan Watts and Jack Byrne also went close as Rovers continually carved out chances. There was also a penalty shout on the half hour when to Hoops’ eyes, at any rate, Cummins was pushed in the area.

A corner was awarded, which proved fruitless. Dan Carr replaced skipper Finn after the break and spurned a great opportunity when he cut in from the left to curl a shot agonizingly past the right upright.

It was just one of a multiplicity of Rovers’ misses. Romeo Parkes, who toiled hard upfront alongside Ronan Coughlan, executed the Bit O Red’s only first half shot on target early on but Alan Mannus gathered safely.

Substitute Kris Twardek found some space late on but his shot flew well wide. It was a the other end that a heroic Sligo rearguard excelled and Shamrock Rovers fall further behind rivals Dundalk in the title race.
