Shamrock Rovers left it late to book their place in the EA SPORTS Cup semi-finals as they overcame Longford Town 1-0 in Tallaght Stadium.

The Hoops were expected by many to sweep past their First Division opponents but that didn't prove to be the case as Alan Mathews' side gave a good account of themselves.

Both teams made several changes to their line-ups and some of the younger players impressed, including Dillon who was a threat from early on.

Gavin Boyne had a good opportunity to spoil the hosts' party but the Longford player failed to convert. And with that the two sides went in at the break scoreless.

Rovers did look the most likely to score in the first period and they kept that going in the second half with Dillon, again, wreaking havoc.

The in-form player eventually got his reward just past 80 minutes when he found his way into the penalty area and kept his cool to fire in.

Rovers held on to claim the victory, but Longford can take many positives from their performance even though they were under pressure for a lot of the game.
