Honours even in an excellent match at the Tallaght Stadium as Shamrock Rovers came from behind to draw with a well-drilled Waterford side.
Waterford bossed the opening 20 minutes and carved out four half chances without making the breakthrough. Rovers came more into the game as the half wore on but shots from Ethan Boyle and Graham Burke apart, the Hoops rarely threated Lawrence Vigouroux’s net.
The Blues impressive midfield quartet of Gavan Holahan, skipper Paul Keegan, Stanley Aborah and Bastien Hery continued to prompt and Waterford deservedly took a 38th minute lead. Aborah rolled the ball to Holan 25 yards out.
Holohan’s well struck effort appeared to swerve and beat Tomer Chencinski in the home goal. Two half-time substitutions and presumably a stern talking to by Head Coach Stephen Bradley revitalised Rovers and the home side dominated the second half.
Substitute Brandon Miele might have equalised from a Greg Bolger chip before Graham Burke celebrated his international call-up with a clinical strike. The other substitute Dan Carr did all the spadework for Graham Burke’s leveller.
Carr used his strength and pace to beat Rory Feely and clipped a cross to the far post, which Burke despatched to the net with a neat flick of his head. It was one way traffic from there on but Waterford weathered the storm to earn a valuable point.
