Extra.ie FAI Cup holders Shamrock Rovers secured a quarter-final spot thanks to a 2-1 win over Cork City.

A brace from Danny Lafferty secured the win despite a spirited performance from the Leesiders with Gearoid Morrissey's second-half equaliser.

The FAI Cup holders started the game strongly and deservedly went ahead in the 37th minute. Graham Burke's effort was only parried by Cork City goalkeeper Liam Bossin and Lafferty followed up to put the home side ahead.

Neale Fenn's side responded well in the second-half and were level within the first four minutes after the break. It was a wonderful goal as well. Dylan McGlade produced a fantastic assist, as he played and received several one-two's before he found Morrissey in the area who fired home.

Both sides created chances throughout the second-half but it was the home side who scored the winner as Lafferty produced a fantastic run down the left and scored in the 67th minute.
