Drogheda United moved back into second position of the First Division with a late victory over the now third-placed Shelbourne FC.

There was much anticipation going into this game but it failed to materialise as both sides struggled to stamp any sort of authority on the game. The first half was one of little action with both teams failing to create any clear cut chances.

The visitors may have just shaded it with several opportunities scrambled away from inside the box but neither manager would have been happy at the break. The second half wasn't much better with chances once again at a premium.

Much like the first 45, however, Drogheda looked more like the home side and seemed the most likely to find the net. As the game entered the dying stages, there was a sense around the stadium that the visitors could leave Dublin with smiles on their faces.

That feeling proved accurate in the 89th minute when Drogheda were awarded a free kick just outside the box, and Sean Brennan stepped up to confidently stroke the ball into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

Raised hands in the air in a nonchalant style more associated with Eric Cantona was the last sight the Shelbourne fans saw as their promotion hopes took a blow.
