Shelbourne saw their playoff hopes take a hit after they threw away a two-goal lead to see Athlone Town grab a point following a 2-2 draw at Tolka Park on Friday night.

The visitors would have been encouraged by their start to the game, but like many other home games this season, Shels worked their way into the game and began to dominate.

However, it took a penalty to break the deadlock in the 33th minute after a corner into the box was punched clear by the visiting keeper and Kyle Hogan was adjudged to have shoved Adam Evans in the back on the edge of the box. David O'Sulivan stepped up and expertly slotted past Darcy Lawless.

James English doubled their advantage 11 minutes later when he showed an exquisite touch to take the ball past his marker before casually finding the bottom corner.

Athlone improved dramatically in the second half and gave themselves hope though a freak goal by Ian Fletcher as he nonchalantly flicked his foot at a cross into the box and the ball somehow bounced past Delany and nestled into the bottom corner.

The visitors then equalised eight minutes later when Hamzat side-footed first time into the top corner from 18 yards.
