Sligo took the lead with the first shot on goal. Kieran Sadlier broke down the left wing, and lofted a cross into the box which was met by the head of Sligo captain John Russell to put the home side in front after four minutes.

Sligo continued to work admirably and prevented Shamrock Rovers from settling into the game. In truth, both sides resorted to long range efforts, with neither goalkeeper being troubled throughout the first half. Sligo went in 1-0 at the break after a disciplined and industrious first half performance.

The second half continued in the same fashion, with Sligo hassling the away side, being quick in the tackle and working excellently to nullify the Shamrock Rovers threat. However, after 58 minutes the home side were reduced to 10 men, as Russell received a second yellow card for a late foul.

Shamrock Rovers attempted to control the game but Sligo remained disciplined and difficult to break down. As was the case in the first half, Shamrock Rovers were reduced to long shots from outside the box, none of which gave Micheal Schlingermann any trouble.

In the end, Sligo Rovers held on to claim a priceless three points, which delighted the home support and manager Gerard Lyttle, who now have moved out of the relegation zone.
