Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United had to settle for a point each in an exciting clash at The Showgrounds.

This was a crucial game for both sides, who are both mired in a relegation battle. It was the home side who started the better of the two teams.

New signing Benny Igiehon had the first shot on goal, as his fierce shot was palmed wide by Stephen McGuinness. Sligo continued to look for the opening goal, with some nice link-up play.

Igiehon held the ball up well an played in Daniel Kearns on the left side, who cut inside onto his right foot and curled a shot goalwards, which rattled the crossbar.

Sligo had the majority of the possession, but couldn't find a goal and it was scoreless at half time.

Drogheda emerged in the second half much improved, and took the lead to a superb effort from Sean Russell. The ball was headed up in the air by Sligo's Tobi Adebayo-Rowling outside the box, and Russell met the dropping ball with fierce left-footed shot which nestled in the top corner in what may well be one of the goals of the season.

Sligo responded well, and sought to apply the pressure to the Drogheda defence like they had done in the first half, winning a multitude of corners. They were rewarded for their efforts, as Cretaro played in Rhys McCabe on the right, who cut inside onto his left foot and finished calmly to equalise for Sligo on his home debut.

Sligo had a goal disallowed after Ayunga played in Kearns who poked the ball home, but the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play.

The game finished 1-1 and Sligo will have been frustrated that they could not find a winning goal. They remain outside the relegation zone by a point, while Drogheda remain bottom.
