Sligo Rovers moved out of the relegation zone with an excellent win against Limerick City on a fine evening at The Showgrounds.

Sligo made a flying start to the game and scored with their first effort on goal, as Michael Leahy leapt highest to meet John Russell’s free kick, and Raffaele Cretaro fired the ball home after just two minutes.

Sligo then doubled their lead shortly thereafter as a long ball forward was not dealt with by the Limerick defence, and Cretaro turned provider for Jonah Ayunga, who put the ball into the back of the net with a deft touch.

Sligo went on to maintain control of the game throughout the half, with Kieran Sadlier causing the Limerick defence all sorts of problems, with a shot that hit the crossbar, and winning several corners for his team in the first half.

Sligo were 2-0 to the good at half-time. Sadlier was rewarded for his fantastic first-half display straight after the break, as Liam Martin dragged a low cross across the box which wasn’t cleared, and Sadlier ghosted in at the far post to tuck the ball away to make it 3-0 after 47 mins.

Sligo regained their control of the game, and hardly gave their opponents a sniff. The game passed with no other major incidents, and Sligo ran out highly deserved 3-0 winners, which will no doubt have impressed new manager Gerard Lyttle, who has his first win at the helm of Sligo Rovers.
