Ian Bermingham was the goalscoring hero for St. Patrick’s Athletic in their narrow 1-0 win over Limerick at Richmond Park on Friday evening, as he scored the game’s only goal early in the second half to seal the points for Liam Buckley’s side.

The left-back will receive most of the plaudits, but it was Saints’ right-back, Simon Madden, who provided their main attacking threat throughout, giving Billy Dennehy a torrid time in his defensive role on his return to Inchicore.

It was Madden who provided the hosts with their best chance of the first half, but Jake Keegan couldn’t get the desired contact on his effort. In the second, Madden’s dominance of his flank continued and on another run forward he was fouled rashly by Dennehy, which saw the Limerick No.20 needlessly booked.

Conan Byrne delivered from the set-piece onto his captain’s head to power home an impressive header. James Doona should have made it two with 15 minutes left, but he blazed over from under the crossbar after Ryan Brennan’s back-heeled effort fell into his path.

Madden again created another chance, this time for Brennan, but his similarly close-range effort was blocked behind.
