St. Patrick's Athletic recorded their third successive Premier Division victory by beating UCD 2-0 at Richmond Park.

Second half goals from Ciaran Kelly and Mikey Drennan secured the win and the scoreline probably should have been greater. A scoreless first half won't live long in the memory but Ian Bermingham and Conor Clifford both came close for the home side as UCD defended stubbornly.

It was the visitors who started the second half brighter but they couldn't capitalise on a couple of promising attacks. The home crowd was beginning to grow frustrated before Saints defender Ciaran Kelly broke the deadlock with a header just before the hour.

The goal was the 20-year-old's first for the senior side. Pat's sprung into life after the goal and probably should have doubled the lead soon after with Mikey Drennan, Gary Shaw and Clifford all having shots saved within minutes.

Drennan made up for it with five minutes remaining when he fired home a rebound after substitute Darragh Markey's shot was saved. The win was Saints' fifth out of the last six games and they will hope to continue this good form away to Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers on Monday.

UCD have now lost three successive matches and host Sligo Rovers on the same night.
