Early goals in each half proved enough for a dominant St. Patrick’s Athletic to see off Drogheda United 2-0 in Richmond Park on Friday evening. Kurtis Byrne added to Ian Bermingham’s early strike, which was the least Saints deserved from a dominant performance in Inchicore. Bermingham opened the scoring in the first half with a well-taken volley at the back post, after a sublime cross-field ball from Conan Byrne found him wandering free in the box. As the ball dropped, he placed his volley back across Stephen McGuinness and into the bottom corner. Saints then went on to completely boss the first half and despite having 11 shots to Drogheda’s none before the break, the score remained 1-0. Kurtis Byrne and Christy Fagan could have had several goals each, but a lack of efficiency in front of goal matched with some outstanding saves from McGuinness kept the visitors in it. The second half started as the first ended, and Pat’s soon doubled their advantage. Some tidy play at the edge of the box saw Darragh Markey slip Kurtis Byrne through, who made no mistake in firing beyond the excellent McGuinness. From then it got comfortable for the Saints, and Buckley’s men were happy to keep the ball and see the game out to secure a vital three points.
