St. Patrick’s Athletic took a huge step towards survival at Richmond Park tonight with an astonishing comeback victory against recently crowned champions Cork City 4-2. City raced into an early two-goal lead through Ryan Delaney and a stunning strike from Kieran Sadlier. Conditions played their part leading to the opener, which eventually saw Delaney tap in from close range. Then came Sadlier with a late contender for goal of the season, as he sent a fierce whipped shot across goal, curling away from Lukas Skowron, off the upright and into the top corner. Liam Buckley then had to gamble and brought on Kurtis Byrne. The decision was vindicated as Pat’s then took the game to the champions. Some sustained pressure brought a corner, from which Balk lost his man and headed home. Before the break, Ian Bermingham set Billy Dennehy through, who cut back inside and curled past Alan Smith for the leveller. Pat’s took the lead in the second half. Good exchange play from Christy Fagan and Kurtis Byrne saw Bermingham get behind the City backline and prod home Saints’ third. Saints then took a two-goal lead themselves. Dennehy got down the left and planted a cross on K Byrne’s head, who looped a perfect header into the top corner. From then, Pat’s were able to see the game out and pick up a deserved three points.
